There are many ways to lace shoes. The most common is crisscross, as described in these steps.

Place the shoe you are going to lace in front of you with the toes end facing out and away from you. This position gives you an advantage point to evenly crisscross the lace up the shoe.

Lace the two front holes nearest the toe-end of the shoe. These front holes are side-by-side. Keep in mind that you want the exact middle of the lace between these 2 holes. The lace now has 2 sides of equal length. If not, adjust by pulling the shorter end to the even out with the longer end. Pull both sides of the lace up and measure. If still not even, continue to adjust.

Make sure as you lace up the shoe towards you that you crisscross, diagonal direction, inserting the right end of the lace into the opposite (left) hole.

Continue inserting the lace through the holes of the shoe alternating between the 2 lace ends. The lace ends crisscross the lace, making sure the lace overlaps.

Keep lacing each end, crisscrossing, until you are done lacing through all the holes.

Always check your shoe laces to make sure they stay even during the lacing. Uneven laces make it hard to tie your shoes correctly and keep them tied tight.
